Kabalevsky: Lullaby, Op. 27, No. 8 (Early Intermediate)

• This lullaby has a gentle, song-like quality, but also some concern or worry is hidden in the character of the music.

Cantabile is an important clue to realizing the singing tone for the melody.

• Even though it is a through-composed piece and there is no set material that repeats in a conventional sense identifying the form, it is interesting how the composer uses the strict discipline of developing short motives to create a unified composition.

• The eighth-note figure is constant throughout and almost always forms a seventh chord of some type.

• One should be aware that the accompaniment figure is marked p in the beginning, which differs from the melody, which is marked mp.

• Note the dynamics switch in measure 15 with the indication cantabile e poco marcato.

• An interesting facet of the piece is in measure 31, where Kabalevsky has indicated a little ritardando before the quasi-return of the opening material. (A slight ritardando in measure 14 is also possible).

• There is no pedaling indicated. One should consider playing without pedal and relying on legato fingering.

• Notice that the four eighth notes in the left hand (at the beginning) are phrased together. Every time the four eighth notes start, a new phrase begins.

• One of the challenges is that the two hands are not phrasing together.
